Robert Weinberg, born in New York City in 1950, began his study of martial arts in 1959 with the American Buddhist Academy in New York as a student of judo instructor Rev. R. Nishi. His instructors have included S. Kobayashi, N. Higashi and Y. Matsumora (Judo), Rev. S. Kan (Kendo), and Sogen Sakiyama (Zen Studies). He studied Judo, Kendo and Jujitsu, with these teachers in New York City and Connecticut. While a student at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut Mr. Weinberg began studying Shorin-ryu Karate with Robert J. Inferrera, an early student of Grandmaster Shimabukuro.

After competing his BA, Mr. Weinberg traveled to Okinawa to study with Grandmaster Shimabukuro. He lived with the Grandmaster through 1972 and 1973 and returned to open his first school in New York City in 1974. He has completed a total of 14 Special Training program in Okinawa and the United States.

Mr. Weinberg was certified as a Shihan (instructor) in 1973 by the Grandmaster. He was promoted to Kyudan/Hanshi (Ninth Degree Black Belt/Grandmaster level Instructor) in 2008. He also holds a Godan (Fifth Degree Black Belt) in Okinawan Kobudo.

Mr. Weinberg recently retired from a career with the City of New York, including work with The Auditor General, The Department of Investigation, and the Organized Crime Control Commission (Business Integrity Commission), among others.
